Dinoland Map
Disney’s California Adventure Fun Map by Rennie Rau Marquez (2001)
With this project I had the idea of celebrating my love of Dinoland USA at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and all of it’s quirky details in a fun map. I still treasure the fun map I got of Disney’s California Adventure in 2001 by Rennie Rau Marquez and wanted to borrow the fun and carefree style she employed on hers.
Research
I first used Google Earth and maps to get the layout correct, then pored over thousands of images to make sure I captured the spirit of the land. It was an ever-evolving design, figuring out what the keep, what to leave out and what to feature in the border postcards.
Jigsaw
I also made a jigsaw version of the map, and when the company told me I could design my own box, I thought "what would Chester and Hester do?". Well, they'd probably reuse an old car parts box - waste not, want not!
Souvenirs
I also produced a number of souvenirs that felt like they organically came from Dinoland
Business cards of some of the land’s residents; Chester and Hester’s card had the sun-bleaching effect printed on to feel extra antique.
A NASA-style mission patch for the brave explorers undertaking a Time Rover expedition
Souvenir postcards designed to look like they came from The Dino Institute’s gift shop.
A hand-aged bathroom key for Chester & Hester’s complete with greasy thumbprint befitting a mechanics, and a real antique key.
