Disneyland Paris Open/Closed Signs

The original solution to the closed door problem implemented by operations. We wanted to replace these with something more thematic and integrated.

A new French law meant all doors at the Disneyland Paris resort had to remain closed to save energy, but guests thought this meant everywhere was closed. Temporary solutions had been implemented, but these were often adding visual clutter and were out of keeping with the theming.

Working with the local Walt Disney Imagineering team, I helped develop the idea of a two sided flag that could be simply added onto any door, and flipped when the location was open or closed. Each land received a unique design, themed to that land’s visual identity. Uniform shades of green and red helped guests recognise them resort-wise, and also helped guests who spoke neither French nor English to understand. Additional touches helped the theming, such as leather fringe for Frontierland, or gold stitching for Place de Remy.
